Covadonga is situated in the interior of Asturias, between mountains and sea. It is a privileged place, the harmony and beauty of which are an invitation to stop and contemplate. A presence invades Covadonga, in the "Holy Cave", Mary, the mother of Jesus, to whom popular devotion has given the name of the "Santina". The Cave of Our Lady and the Sanctuary which the faithful have consecrated to this "petite and gallant" image, with child in arms and a golden flower in her right hand, are a monument to the faith of the Asturian people and to that of the whole of Spain.. Mary is both image and Mother of the Church and of every Christian community which listens to the word, celebrates the sacraments and lives in charity. From this Sanctuary a need has been felt to irradiate and inform on the figure of Mary and her significance in the history of salvation in new ways, while at the same time reflect on popular devotion and its different forms of expression. The Archbishop and Chapter of the Sanctuary have searched for an instrument of pastoral reflection which fulfils this need. For this purpose a dialogue has been opened with an institution of renowned experience, the Pontificate Theological Faculty "Marianum". |

The "Mariological" bi-annual course promoted by the "Mariological" Institute "Our Lady of Covadonga" in the diocese of Oviedo and in collaboration with the Pontificate Theological Faculty "Marianum", attempts to offer suitable means to learn about the figure of Mary, Mother of God, and her place in the Salvation Plan, and her relevance to Christian life from liturgical-biblical, anthropological and popular piety perspectives. Apart from the possibility of studying this field of theology in detail, the Sanctuary also offers us a space for prayer and rest through participation in the moments of prayer of the Sanctuary and of the Holy Cave in the evening. |
